A mother, an artist and a philanthropist Hareg, is a leading member of the arts community in Ethiopia. Hargewoin Aseffa, known to her fans passionately as Hareg; she has graced the Ethiopian National Theatre stage for over fifteen years. She has in recent years crossed over to television and the movie screen working on multiple feature films and long running television dramas. A starlet of Ethiopian cinema; a loved darling of the theatre stage and the gripping voice of radio dramas, she is beloved actress the country. Hareg is multitalented actress who also gives back to community causes through her humanitarian initiatives.
Hareg’s career began at a young age driven by her passion for acting, her first break came at the age of seventeen when she was casted as Juliet in Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet a role which she says is her best performance to date. In the early years of her career she would go on to grace the theatre stage with many portrayals of Shakespearian characters in king Lear, Hamlet and Antigone. Throughout her remarkable career, the theater has seen her performance in the internationally acclaimed “8 woman” and in one of her greatest performance in her portrayal of “Hende K” and ancient Ethiopian heroin queen.
Hareg relentlessly demands the audience’s full attention as soon as she appears on stage or screen. Praised and admired for her inspiring and powerful performances, she gives all to the portrayal of the characters she plays. Although it is the theatre stage that has given her notoriety, she has also brought to the screen strong female characters in long running dramas, and on the large screen with dozens of movie titles under her name. As a radio personality she has worked on audio book reading programming’s, in addition to her own weekly program dedicated to social issues.
Away form the screen and the public eye; Hareg is a devoted wife and mother to two children, with her time off work dedicated to her family. A dedicated humanitarian Hareg volunteers, works with and has been an ambassador for causes she views as being important. Hareg has been an ambassador for SKERD Internationals, through her work with woman and children. She has also participated in the “Ethiopian great Run” to support woman causes. From An early stage in her career she has given her time and energy to her charitable passions. She is currently working with multiple not for profits and charities. Moreover she has a radio show dedicated to giving voice to important causes to listeners across Ethiopia; her tireless work on child marriage leading to a change in national policy.
